I am Robb Schaller, and this is the portfolio for Paliuli, Watercolors, which I created as an umbrella for the wide variety of watercolor work that I produce. My interest in painting began on the Island of Hawai'i, when I was a student at the University of Hawai'i, and for many years the islands were my main muse for creating paintings. The vibrancy of color is still very influential in my work, but I have expanded my vision and am being stimulated by prehistoric, tribal and symbolic imagery from around the world. "Hamakua Kine"

"Hamakua-Kine" is a bird's-eye view of the Island of Hawai'i, looking from the area around the Waipio Valley on the northeast coast, across the agricultural areas of Hamakua and Waimea, past the Kohala Mountains on the right and Mauna Kea on the left, then down to Hapuna Beach on the other side of the island. There is surf in the ocean in the foreground, waterfalls and rivers moving back across mountains and valleys and then finally the sparkling waters of Mahukona.

It is painted in a "primitive" style to have a child-like quality to shapes such as houses, trees and other natural things. This is a watercolor-gouache painting, 3' X 3' and it is matted, framed and mounted under plexiglass.

"A Garden of Buddhas: 13 Smiles", watercolor.

This painting was begun as a landscape on the pool deck at Kalani Honua on the Island of Hawai'i and was completed in the artist's San Francisco studio. Miraculously, one-by-one, the smiling Buddhas emerged, manifesting behind trees and peeking over giant tropical leaves, like appearing and disappearing Cheshire cats.

Image size 10" X 14". Matted and framed. Available from the artist for $800.00. (No longer available from the artist).

Artist Robb Schaller writes: "For twenty years, I took a daily run along the San Francisco waterfront, and my turn-around spot was Fort Point, at the southern anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge. Looking up from this perspective, the bridge appeared to be arced before it gracefully flies across the San Francisco Bay. I painted the bridge the way I experienced it; with all of the movement of the elements, wind, fog, mists, earth, streaming water, sparkling sunshine. It is all about constant movement, and the amazing art deco sculptural roller-coaster that glides through a dynamic natural environment."

"Kūkā'ilimoku",watercolor, gouache.

Kūkā'ilimoku was Hawai'ian King Kamehameha's god of war, whose power was believed by the king to be responsible for his being able to unite all of the Hawai'ian islands as one nation. Usually depicted three-dimensionally as a tiki image, this painting in the artist's expression of the fierce and transcendent nature of this ancient god.

"Ike (pronounced ee'-kay)--The World is What You Think It Is"

This large watercolor, "Ike-The World Is What You Think It Is", is based on the Seventh Principle of Huna, by the same name. The faces are taken from early artist's renderings of Polynesians as the Europeans viewed them as they arrived in the Islands with Captain Cook. The person (or people) in the painting are moving from a state of po (darkness, sightlessness) to a state of la (vision, light), in which they realize that they are an integral part of the natural and supernatural world, interrelating with all that is around them. Their spirit guide has a halo word, "malamalama" (a light of knowledge or epiphany), above his head as he gently leads into a world of beauty, love, surprise, challenge, humor, terror and wonder.

"A Provence of the Imagination"

"First Shirt", watercolor.

The first of Paliuli's floating shirt series, this watercolor was destroyed in a fire at theAkaka Falls Gallery, Bed and Breakfast and School of Cooking, in Honomu, Island of Hawai'i. The fire completely destroyed the complex of businesses.

Sometimes the images in Paliuli's floating shirt series are other than aloha shirts.

In this watercolor, the artist has created a "portrait" of his kumu hula, Patrick Makuakane, by depicting lessons learned as images on a simple t-shirt. "Kumu Shirt" is in the collection of Patrick Hammond, Los Angeles, California.

In the 1990s, Paliuli created a series of twenty floating Hawai'ian shirt watercolors, in full watercolor-sheet format.

This watercolor, "Floating Shirt", was a favorite of that series, and is in the collection of Mark and Mimi Stegner, Gilbert, Arizona.

Paliuli is fascinated by hula, the process of passing down oral history from kumu (teacher) to haumana (student), and the images that the dance, music and chanting, evoke.

I am Robb Schaller, and this is the portfolio for Paliuli, Watercolors, which I created as an umbrella for the wide variety of watercolor work that I produce. My interest in painting began on the Island of Hawai'i, when I was a student at the University of Hawai'i, and for many years the islands were my main muse for creating paintings. The vibrancy of color is still very influential in my work, but I have expanded my vision and am being stimulated by prehistoric and tribal imagery from around the world.
